Beyond the headline: how clubs build a transfer shortlist

Transfer coverage often begins with a name and a fee. Recruitment begins somewhere else: with a question about the team. Does the squad need a defender who can defend wide spaces, or one who can organise a deep line? A shortlist only makes sense once the role is clear.

Scouts then look beyond a player's best moments. They watch repeated decisions: positioning without the ball, reaction after losing possession and how a player handles pressure. The same player may be excellent in one system and uncomfortable in another.

There is also the practical work. Contract terms, wages, fitness history, availability and the player's own ambitions can change a deal. A smart club prepares more than one option rather than allowing a single negotiation to decide its season.

The most convincing transfers are not always the loudest. They are the ones where the club understands what it needs, the player understands the role and the manager can make the fit work on the pitch.
